Forest Beacon https://biomorphiclumia.com/2024/07/09/forest-beacon-mushroom-sculpture/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 23:04:23 +0000 https://biomorphiclumia.com/?p=662 Introducing the Forest Beacon sculpture, a vibrant, multi-colored masterpiece resembling a fantastical mushroom or toadstool growing from a stump adorned with golden chanterelles. Each version features unique materials, from wood-like filaments to shiny metallics, enhancing its ethereal charm. Standing 16.5 inches (42 cm) tall and illuminated by an internal LED bulb, the Forest Beacon combines a bright, iridescent cap with a textured stump, evoking wonder and enchantment with its striking, whimsical appearance.

The Forest Beacon is an illuminated sculpture that evokes the quiet mystique of a fantastical woodland growth—part mushroom, part totemic lantern. Rising gracefully from a textured stump, the form recalls an oversized toadstool or forest sentinel, its vibrant cap shimmering with iridescent color. Along its base, tiered shelf fungi echo the golden hues of chanterelles, lending the piece a sense of organic stratification and slow, natural accumulation.

Multiple iterations of the stump have been developed, each exploring a different material vocabulary. Some employ a wood–plastic filament that captures the tactile warmth and irregular grain of natural timber; others use a metallic-infused filament that heightens the work’s ethereal, otherworldly presence. In every version, the finely articulated smaller fungi reinforce the impression of a living ecosystem paused in a moment of emergence.

Standing approximately 16.5 inches (42 cm) tall, the Forest Beacon is internally lit by a single LED source. This gentle illumination transforms the sculpture into a luminous object—its cap glowing with soft radiance while the darker stump and golden accents create a dramatic interplay of shadow and light. The result is a work that feels simultaneously whimsical and reverent, inviting viewers into an atmosphere of quiet enchantment.

Lightcrawlers are a series of modular, illuminated sculptures that bring a sense of quiet mystery and playful sentience to the garden landscape. Composed of translucent, bulb-like segments, each articulated at a subtle fifteen-degree offset, these forms can be gently rotated to alter posture and gesture. Their serpentine bodies—ending in claw-like or exploratory “heads”—evoke the slow, searching movement of nocturnal creatures, part botanical, part animal, and entirely imagined.

The modularity extends to their leg structures, which can be repositioned to refine stance and balance, allowing each Lightcrawler to adopt its own attitude and presence. Whether upright in a moment of alert curiosity or stretched in a tentative reach, no two assemblies present quite the same silhouette.

Designed as luminous interventions within the outdoor environment, Lightcrawlers function as sculptural garden lights. During daylight hours, their translucent surfaces catch and refract sunlight, giving the impression of growths that have just emerged from the soil. At night, solar-charged LEDs illuminate the interior chambers, transforming the forms into softly glowing sentinels that activate automatically at dusk. Their name playfully echoes the “nightcrawler,” suggesting both biological inspiration and an otherworldly reinterpretation of familiar earthbound life.

By day reflective, by night radiant, Lightcrawlers inhabit the threshold between object and organism—quiet companions that animate and enchant the spaces they inhabit.

The Ember Spiral is a sculptural species which debuted 2024. It is an imaginative fusion of botanical geometry and luminous ornament. Rising in a graceful helical sweep, the work is fabricated from an innovative 3D-printed medium composed of thirty percent real wood fiber, giving the surface a tactile warmth and a visibly articulated grain that recalls hand-carved natural forms.

At its base, a central spiral unfurls into five gently arcing branches, each culminating in a translucent, flame-like element. These terminal forms contain clusters of minute LEDs that emit jewel-toned points of red, blue, yellow, and green. When illuminated, they imbue the sculpture with an internal vitality, as though each flame were a living bud shimmering with stored energy.

Drawing inspiration from the emergent spirals of ferns and other unfurling plant structures, the Ember Spiral suggests both growth and motion. Its interplay of warm wood tones with luminous, color-shifting accents creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously contemplative and playful. The sculpture’s gentle radiance transforms its surroundings, offering a subtle sense of uplift and enchantment.

Standing approximately 15 inches (38 cm) tall and powered by low-voltage LEDs via USB connection, the Ember Spiral merges craft, natural metaphor, and technological innovation into a singular, evocative object.

The “Electric Fireworm” is a new biomorphic light sculpture I designed in early 2024. It’s crafted from 3D printed parts and adorned with dozens of LEDs. It contains computerized lights with endless patterns that convey moods and energy levels. The sculpture is intentionally made to resemble a worm creature or a succulent stalk.

In the process, I worked diligently to ensure the form of the piece flowed with a graceful arch, while adding playful bulbs for visual appeal. Through numerous iterations, I experimented to achieve the desired shape and translucency. I eventually created bulbs that refract light in eye-catching ways. Moreover, the bulbs now even beam light forward, casting small spotlights on walls and objects near the worm.

Designed to be modular, this biomorphic light sculpture stands approximately 26 inches (66 cm) tall. Additionally, it is illuminated with 49 LEDs, which are controlled individually by an internal microcomputer. Consequently, the Electric Fireworm is capable of producing endless variety of animated light patterns and cascades. Some of those patterns are energetic, while others are calmer. As a result, the Electric Fireworm can be configured to match a user’s mood or the mood of a space.

Assembling the creature revealed the need for supports to stand up. That prompted the design of the distinctive worm feet for the base. This addition not only imbues the sculpture with character but firmly places it within the “animal kingdom.”

Following its creation, I embarked on naming the creature. After brainstorming, the word “fireworm” resonated, aligning perfectly with the character of this electric segmented worm. Upon researching, I discovered that not only does a “fireworm” exist in the natural world, but it bears a striking resemblance to my creation. Thus, “Electric Fireworm” became the fitting name.

Looking ahead, I believe the modular design of this biomorphic light sculpture is indeed a success. Not only can I create sculptures taller than the volume of my printer, but each module prints cleanly. As I look to the future, I’m eager to evolve this creature into other forms. Perhaps I’ll continue to utilize the same bulb modules employed in the Electric Fireworm. Or perhaps I’ll explore entirely new designs.

“Phonifungus” Biomorphic Sculptures https://biomorphiclumia.com/2023/10/27/biomorphic-sculpture-phonifungus/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 22:30:39 +0000 https://biomorphiclumia.com/?p=410 Introducing my "Phonifungus" series - experimental biomorphic sculptures inspired by natural Stinkhorn Fungus. A whimsical addition for a home or garden!

These biomorphic sculptures are my “Phonifungus” series. It’s a work-in-progress . My goal is to create beautiful and curious art for the home and the garden. These are still in the experimental stage. I plan to design and build the proper lights for these. And I also plan to make them much larger!

These biomorphic sculptures are inspired by the Stinkhorn Fungus, a natural exotic plant. I create each phonifungus with a polygonal lattice, like most computer models. Then I allow the areas between the edges to dissolve away. It’s much like the natural process of “apoptosis“: programmed cell death. It’s the process by which blobs of a fetus seem to melt away to become refined fingers and toes.

(The term “Phonifungus” simply means “phony fungus”. A biomorphic sculpture is artificial, after all!)

The Night Gourd is conceived as an outdoor companion—an illuminated sculpture designed to harmonize with the garden and heighten the quiet drama of natural spaces. Its silhouette falls somewhere between a gourd, a paisley flourish, a comma, and a question mark: a gesture at once familiar and enigmatic. What, exactly, does this shape propose? The work invites that inquiry.

Crafted in durable PETG, the Night Gourd is built to endure the elements. Several early pieces have lived outdoors for over a year, their surfaces unweathered and their structure unchanged, a testament to the material’s resilience under prolonged sunlight and shifting seasons. The water-resistant electronics within allow rain and dew to settle harmlessly on the form—poetically described as “tears of happiness.”

Illuminated by low-power LEDs, the Night Gourd carries its soft glow wherever it travels, having accompanied the artist across continents and climates. Its presence—whether in a garden, a patio, or a far-off landscape—poses a second quiet question: Where will the Night Gourd appear next?

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

In this case, the bean came first. I modeled a sphere and extended it into a gentle curve. Then I created the lattice pattern which is like a honeycomb, or the pattern on a strawberry. It became a hybrid creation: a bit of flora, a bit of fauna. The egg of a hybrid creature. The upper part, the egg shape, is striking by itself, and I’d like to explore that shape a bit further for garden sculptures. But coupled with the base, the shape works as an indoor lamp. I extended the metaphors of strawberry and egg, designing the base to have leaves around the “fruit”, and to stand on gnarled chicken toes.

I called it a “Griffin Egg”, but some called it a “Dragon’s Egg”…

They might be right! It’s a form that I allowed to evolve intuitively, and I’m still learning about what it means to people. What do you think? I’m excited about the mixture of these plant and animal forms. I look forward to exploring more hybrid ideas like this!
